KOM, in partnership with Merrick Community Services and Hired, has been providing young adults a two-part training program to provide human service specific skills and credentials as part of Ramsey County Learn and Earn. Once the first part of training is complete, participants can continue to a paid work experience with a local human service agency such as KOM.
According to their website, the Ramsey County Learn & Earn Program (RCLE) provides young adults education and training in a number of fields while earning money. Potential careers range from entrepreneurship to manufacturing, and more. Opportunities are “in-demand careers that show promise for future growth, pay livable wages and are accessible to workers with diverse employment and educational background.”
Get to know Moo Doe Paw, and her experience at KOM!
Moo Doe Paw began the RCLE program in September and officially graduated from training in November. For the second part of the program, she is currently interning here at KOM in human services.
Moo Doe Paw first learned about RCLE through a social media post from a different organization. She applied because she “wanted to gain more experience” and was looking to continue her education after graduating high school and was drawn towards RCLE’s human services program.
“I just want to help people,” Moo Doe Paw said.
At KOM, her internship duties include assisting clients with making phone calls, filling out forms, and translating, as well as helping watch over the after-school program at Como Park Senior High School twice a week.
“Everyone [at KOM] is very nice and very friendly and willing to help me in anything,” Moo Doe Paw said.
Interning at KOM has been a full circle moment for Moo Doe, who was born in Burma and came to the United States from Thailand as a refugee in 2012. When they first arrived, Moo Doe and her family received assistance from KOM. Thus, her favorite part of the internship is serving clients as she gets to talk with different people and learn about their stories.
“It’s touching because I’ve been there and had to experience the same type of situation,” Moo Doe Paw said.
After her internship ends, Moo Doe Paw hopes to continue work and taking classes related to human services.
“This is a very great opportunity. I’ve never had an experience like this.”
