71st Anniversary of Karen Martyr’s Day

This year, Minnesota’s Karen community is planning to commemorate the 71st Anniversary of Karen Martyr’s Day on Saturday, August 14th and Sunday, August 15th, 2021.
The event will be held outdoors at Mississippi Creative Arts Magnet School.
Event Schedule
The main ceremony will be held on Saturday, August 14th from 8:30 am to 9:30 am.
For the remainder of the event, attendees can visit KCM (Karen Community of Minnesota) food vendors, participate in games, visit the resource fair, and observe sport tournaments. Tournaments include men’s soccer, men and women’s volleyball, and men’s cane ball.
Background
Karen Martyr’s Day is officially on August 12 and commemorates the anniversary of the death of Saw Ba U Gyi (the first president of the Karen National Union) in 1950. Others who have fought for the Karen are also honored in remembrance of the Karen resistance. For more background information, visit KCM’s Facebook event page.
