Human Services Intern

KOM will not be offering a Human Services Internship in Spring 2025. Stay tuned for updates on Summer and Fall 2025.

Duration: 3-4 months; Can coincide with college semester (12-15 week internship, start and end dates flexible) (Internships are offered in the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters)

Salary: $15 per hour; can be used for college credit

Time Commitment: 10 hours per week during KOM business hours Monday-Friday 8:30am-5:00pm; must be available for at least one shift during the walk-in schedule Monday and Thursday from 9am – 12:00pm, and/or 12:30pm – 3:30pm.

Work Location: 2353 Rice St., Suite 240, Roseville, MN 55113 Hybrid work (mostly in-person with some remote)

Reports to: Program Supervisor, and Volunteer Coordinator

Position Description:

The human services intern will work primarily in support of our walk-in services, as well as with other tasks as assigned within our social service programming. The intern will support KOM’s social service programs by helping with workshops, client follow-up, outreach, and serving clients. Programs the intern may support include our New Arrival Programs, Elders Program, Caregivers Program, and Youth Programs.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide walk-in services at KOM’s office for refugees to address needs including translation/interpreting, completing paperwork, and contacting other agencies for referrals and follow-up
    • Assist for at least one shift during our walk-in schedule Monday and Thursday from 9am – 12:00pm, and/or 12:30pm – 3:30pm. (2 or more shifts preferred)
  • Assist program staff with preparing for educational workshops, including recruiting and following up with participants, and researching content
  • Support program outreach activities and events
  • Help program staff lead workshops when appropriate
  • Connect clients with community resources

Qualifications:

  • Currently studying sociology or human services.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write fluently in English and S’gaw Karen. Ability to speak one or more of the following languages is a plus: Pwo Karen, Karenni, Burmese, or Thai.
  • Ability to work remotely (access to internet, very responsive via email and phone, willing to learn Microsoft Office 365 and other computer programs) and in-person at KOM’s office in Roseville. KOM will provide an intern laptop.

This is a paid position that offers an excellent opportunity to learn about refugee resettlement issues and the broad network of services available to refugees in Minnesota. The human services intern will gain experience in case management, social service program support, interpreting/translating, and client advocacy while helping refugees from Burma access resources to meet their needs and become independent.
