Youth Voices Take the Stage Through Theater Mu Partnership

This spring, youth in the Karen Organization of Minnesota’s afterschool program stepped into the world of storytelling through a special partnership with Theater Mu. Together with Theater Mu teaching artists, students collaborated to create and perform a series of original mini plays centered on themes of identity, belonging, and hopes for the future.

The plays reflected deeply personal experiences while also highlighting the creativity that grew throughout the residency. When asked what inspired what they added to their plays, Moo Paw said, “I added a few lines from my imagination. I wanted to tell a story with the lines I had and showcase what my family went through.” Eh Khu shared, “In the first few [drafts of the] scripts, I thought a lot about my past life in Thailand. For later scripts, I thought more about the future.”

Teaching artists from Theater Mu share an introduction and words of encouragement for the students before their plays.

Since 2023, Theater Mu has partnered with KOM as part of its social practice work with more than 30 community organizations. Through a residency grant, teaching artists have been able to spend meaningful time with students, helping them explore self-expression through theater. Sydney, a teaching artist, reflected, “I love seeing where students start and their growth. That time together is so special.”

The residency gave students a space to imagine, create, and tell stories that matter to them. Through theater, students not only developed new artistic skills, but also strengthened community connections and gained confidence in sharing who they are and who they want to become.

As our youth enjoy summer break before next school year, reliable transportation remains essential. In addition to giving rides, KOM’s vans help foster connection and support, while easing the burden on caregivers. We are working to raise $5,000 for van repair and upkeep costs. Help keep our vans and youth programs running smoothly by giving here.
