Austere bring her career background in family home visiting with a strong foundation in Community Health. She was born and raised in a Thai refugee camp; she spent the first 13 years of her life there before immigrating to the United States. She is fluent in Karen—speaking, reading, and writing the language—and served as an on-call interpreter for the Austin Independent School District. She also assists with reviewing and revising translated documents in Karen and teaches the language at her church.

After earning a B.S. in Health Sciences with a minor in Public Health, Austere began her career as a youth worker and program coordinator. She later pursued a Community Health Worker (CHW) certificate and, while working as a CHW, enrolled in nursing school to become a Registered Nurse. She has now been a nurse for nearly two years and finds deep fulfillment in her expanded role supporting the community.

She is a firm believer in the philosophy of “meeting people where they are,” she carries this approach into every stage of her professional journey.
