Youth Showing Up and Getting Out

This month our after-school programs launched a KOM Student Council! They had a huge turnout for their first meeting and are looking forward to what this team of young leaders will do.

Showing Up: Launching a new KOM Student Council

Started on February 2nd, the purpose of KOM’s Student Council is to have student input to plan for summer programming and the next school year. Youth help plan activities that they want to do and workshops they want to learn about. Students from all four of the SPPS sites that KOM works at are part of the council, including: Harding High School, Como High School, Humboldt Middle & High School, and Washington Technology Magnet Middle & High School.

At their first meeting, enough youth showed up to split into five breakout groups to start planning.

Getting Out

We launched our youth afterschool programs at four Saint Paul Public Schools this past fall. Since then, our youth have gotten to know each other through workshops and activities, getting homework help, and going on field trips!

For one of the trips, the students went rock climbing and learned how to overcome challenges and encourage one another. The latest field trip with Washington’s Karen Club was to an escape room. Through solving puzzles and riddles, students had fun working together and unlocking new critical thinking skills.

Earlier this month, a group of our youth and staff explored the Science Museum of Minnesota. A few of the students shared that they hadn’t gone on a field trip like this in years and loved getting out and having fun! This is what we love to see. Thanks Tickets for Kids Charities for providing this engaging opportunity. ❤️

Our youth and staff take a fun group photo while getting out to visit the Science Museum of Minnesota.

Get Involved!

Always wanted to be a rock star?
✨Host a job shadow student
✨Be a pop up Guest at our After School programs

In our youth programs, we’re actively seeking opportunities to broaden our participants’ horizons and expose them to the vast array of career paths available to them. We invite individuals and companies to consider hosting our youth for a job shadowing experience or a tour of their facilities, offering a firsthand glimpse into various professional environments.

Additionally, we welcome speakers, particularly those from immigrant backgrounds, to share their career journeys and insights in our classroom settings. This initiative is a wonderful way to inspire and educate our youth about the possibilities that await them, while fostering a sense of aspiration and motivation.
