Last year\, we gave out these awards for the first time\, and we are excited to continue the tradition. Winners will receive public recognition and a framed award with the art by area artist Eh Soe Dwe. \nCulture Bearer Award – Aye Lwai\nThrough their example has served as role model for cultural expression\, strengthening preservation of their heritage in Minnesota in harmony with KOM’s mission. \n Aye Lwai was born in Burma\, where she learned to weave from her mother and other elders. During her time in the refugee camp\, she supported her family by weaving and selling traditional Karen shirts\, skirts\, and bags. After resettling to Minnesota\, Aye Lwai became involved in the weaving pilot project in 2015. She quickly distinguished herself as a master weaver due to her experience and enthusiasm for the project. \nOver the past ten years\, Aye Lwai has volunteered her time to teach weaving to youth and young adults in the community. Aye Lwai has also shared about Karen culture with the broader Minnesota community at many events. She believes the weaving circle is important for maintaining and sharing Karen culture across generations. \n  \nEquity Champion Award – Georgia Coleman\nAdvanced KOM’s mission to remove barriers for refugees and immigrants by calling attention to disparities and recommending changes. \n Georgia Coleman is a dedicated Workforce Program Coordinator with a passion for building pathways to opportunity and strengthening communities from the inside out. Through connecting with leadership within Mortenson\, she learned strategic ways to recruit\, train\, and retain diverse construction workforce through a Community Workforce Program; ensuring that local residents have direct access to union wage careers and sustainable employment. Her work is rooted in the belief that economic mobility starts with access\, education\, and accountability\, and she brings that vision to life every day with coordination. Georgia has been a key support for KOM’s career training programs\, increasing access to union trade jobs for our adult clients. \nService Award – Paul Monroe\nHas given their time and talent to the mission of KOM. \n \n\n\n\nPaul Monroe grew up in a rural area of Maryland. In 1989 he accepted a position at the highly regarded Minnesota Regional Sleep Disorders Center in Minneapolis. Paul has had a thirty-year career in Health Care including teaching in a program for Sleep Technicians at a local community college. Paul shares\, “I feel that teaching has always been a strong passion in me and when I retired\, I knew I wanted to volunteer my time in an educational program.” Paul’s volunteer service at KOM focuses on assisting teachers in various Employment Services and Training programs\, particularly the Community Services and Interpreting Program (COSI). Besides assisting in the classroom\, he leads groups reviewing classroom materials\, provides individual tutoring\, and teaches important test preparation skills. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\nIntroducing Our Emcees\nKu Gay Nahpay\nKu Gay is a passionate advocate for youth leadership\, mental health\, and substance use prevention within the Knyaw (Karen) and Kayah (Karenni) community. Born in Kanchanaburi\, Thailand\, she spent her early years in Tham Hin refugee camp before resettling in the U.S. in 2007. \nShe earned her B.A. in Social Work from Bethel University and her Master of Social Work with a concentration in Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counseling from the University of St. Thomas. \nAs the founder of Today’s Leaders\, she walks alongside youth to embrace their identity and leadership potential through community engagement both locally and internationally. She has also worked with the Karen Organization of Minnesota\, helping youth explore college\, career\, and leadership pathways. Now serving as a board member\, Ku Gay is committed to fostering intergenerational connections\, strengthening cultural roots\, and continuing to grow alongside her community. \nMichi Lee\nMichi Lee is a proud Minnesota native- although\, she did cross the border for a stint- to get her BFA in Musical Theater Performance at Viterbo University in La Crosse\, Wisconsin. Michi is a proud mixed Korean American\, who has found joy and purpose in creating stories to share within our local communities. \nNow residing in Hennepin county- Michi has worked with multiple theaters such as Mixed Blood Theatre\, The History Theatre\, and the Artistry- as a performer and an educator. Working as an educator with Theater Mu has also been an incredibly important part of Michi’s life. All children are our future and all children deserve to have their stories told and celebrated. Thank you so much to all who support KOM and all their heroic endeavors! \n\nPerformers\nHarold Torrence and Liliana Rodríguez\nWe have special guests performers\, including Harold Torrence\, who is back this year\, this time performing alongside Liliana Rodríguez on our main stage! Harold Torrence is a Latin American Guitarist and Musician. A teacher as well as a musician\, Torrence regularly plays at different venues across the Twin Cities. Born and raised in Venezuela\, Liliana Rodríguez is a bilingual Assistant Principal\, pianist\, and vocalist whose music celebrates the rich rhythms and colors of Latin America and the Caribbean. SUMMARY:Give to the Max Day 2025
DESCRIPTION:Take a moment to…Pause. Listen. Share.\nPause.\nAs your inbox and newsfeed is flooded this Give to the Max Day with important causes to support\, we ask you to pause to read Thee Da’s personal story – a woman who came to Minnesota as a refugee and works hard to support her children and find support for herself. \nListen.\nWhat we’re doing at KOM is too urgent not to speak up…\n– newly arrived families are finding community support\,\n– refugee adults are getting into stable careers\,\n– and youth are engaging in activities and college prep\,\nthanks to donors like you. The services we provide are lifelines for refugees and immigrants in a historic moment of need. \nShare.\nIf you’ve already given\, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Want to take your impact even further? Share Thee Da’s story with a friend\, a coworker\, or a neighbor. Your voice travels farther than any email we send or post we make. \nYour gift helps clients like Thee Da stay connected.\nKOM staff create spaces where our community feels safe to talk about their struggles and connect to the resources they need. Your generosity helps make that possible without interruption. \nJoin Minnesota’s day of giving from now through November 20th to show your support for refugees and immigrants in MN. Every contribution matters. \n  \nGive today \n  \nShare the story \n  \n“Give to the Max celebrates Minnesota’s spirit of generosity and how that generosity ripples across every community\, city\, and county in our state\,” said Jenna Ray\, executive director and CEO of GiveMN. “Every year\, the campaign starts at $0 and every year we are humbled by the power hundreds of thousands of gifts can have when our community gives together.” \nAbout Give to the Max Day\nGive to the Max Day was created in 2009 to launch GiveMN\, a collaborative venture led by the Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation and many other organizations committed to helping make our state a better place. \nThat initial spark touched off an outpouring of generosity — $14 million in 24 hours. Celebrating its 17th anniversary in 2025\, Give to the Max Day has become Minnesota’s annual giving holiday\, raising $300 million in its first 16 years. Every year\, thousands of organizations and individuals generate donations and excitement for Minnesota causes that are working to improve the quality of life for all Minnesotans.

DESCRIPTION:Please save the dates for the 75th Commemoration of Karen Martyrs’ Day in Minnesota\, currently planned for the weekend of August 9th and 10th. More information to come soon as the community prepares for this important gathering. \n \nSignificance of Karen Martyrs’ Day\nThe official Karen Martyrs’ Day is on August 12 and commemorates the anniversary of the death of Saw Ba U Gyi (one of the early leaders of the Karen National Union) in 1950. SUMMARY:Karen Weavers at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival
DESCRIPTION:Our Karen Weaving Circle are participating in the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington D.C. from July 2nd through July 7th\, 2025. \nThis year’s theme is Youth and the Future of Culture. Our weavers will be part of the Learning Together exhibit\, demonstrating how they pass down the tradition of Karen back-strap weaving to the next generation of Karen youth. \nLearning Together\nRead the description of the learning together exhibit from the Smithsonian Folklife Festival website: \n\n\n“If our people are alive\, our traditions still need to be alive.” \n—Rosie Say\n\n\n“It is important to me to keep our family’s traditions going.” \n—Lila Delgado\n\n\n“Young people often find their time structured by the daily and seasonal rhythms of formal school\, from pre-K to the end of high school and the beginnings of adulthood. Yet school is hardly the only place that emerging artists and artisans learn. \nFamily businesses\, apprenticeships\, camps\, and community organizations create spaces for other kinds of learning. Whether in formal programs or through informal meetings with neighbors and family friends\, these extracurricular teaching relationships ensure that traditional knowledge and skills are passed from generation to generation. \nMaking is a way of coming to know things: environments\, histories\, and ways of living and belonging. In such settings\, creative skills are connected with ways of life and enduring values. When people gather together to weave\, when ranchers use the tools their loved ones or neighbors have made to earn their living\, and when makers and musicians pull sounds out of handcrafted instruments\, the stories of families and communities are told and retold. \nIn the Learning Together area at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival\, see family and community workshops come to life on the National Mall. Learn how handmade objects—and the skills and stories behind them—contribute to distinctive ways of life and cultural legacies across the United States.” \nAbout Our Karen Weaving Circle\n\nThe Karen Weaving Circle is a group of refugee weavers who came together to revive their textile tradition after moving to the United States. Members meet at the East Side Freedom Library in Saint Paul\, Minnesota\, to weave together and to hold classes for the next generation of Karen artisans. As a program of the Karen Organization of Minnesota\, the Weaving Circle enhances community wellbeing and builds bonds between elder and younger generations around culture\, language\, and craft. The weavers also participate regularly in art fairs and community events as well as presentations in public schools. \nKaren (pronounced kuh-REN) people from Burma (Myanmar) in Southeast Asia are a linguistically and culturally diverse people\, who are among the refugees displaced due to government suppression of minorities. Around 20\,000 Karen people live in Minnesota. \nParticipants going to D.C. \n\nAye Lwai\, weaver\nHtee Hser\, weaver\nKu Say\, weaver\nMae Ra Paw\, weaver\nRosie Say\, weaver\nHta Thi Yu Moo\, presenter\nSynthia Htoo\, presenter\n\n\n\nLivestream Presentation from DC about Karen food\nOur weavers and staff will be giving a presentation at the festival about how to make Tak Ka Paw\, a Karen rice porridge dish. Not in DC? You can watch the livestream of their foodways presentation on Sunday\, July 6th at 11:00 am CT/12:00pm ET at this link: \n \nhttps://www.youtube.com/live/cwzxO-w9wro?si=fH5hSl_6VhPcdoSn
