Enhancing the quality of life for all refugees from Burma in Minnesota
Training and Orientation Services
Upon arrival in the United States, most everyday activities and systems are completely new to refugees. The trainings described below are designed to address these knowledge gaps to help refugees access resources, live independently, and become leaders in our community.
Bus Training – We partner with Metro Transit to offer training on how to use public transportation.
Community Health Education – We conduct numerous workshops on a broad range of health issues affecting the Karen community. Topics include, but are not limited to: immunizations, annual check-ups, chronic illness prevention, diabetes, nutrition, mental health, alcohol and drug abuse, and sexually transmitted infections.
Financial Literacy – We offer basic financial literacy classes in partnership with Wells Fargo Bank. Topics include: banking, budgeting, consumer skills, and credit.
Housing Orientation – We teach refugees how to properly clean and maintain their homes, how to request needed repairs, practices to increase home safety, and rights and responsibilities for landlords and tenants.
