Community Engagement Specialist

Position Title: Community Engagement Specialist
Reports to: Co-Executive Director
Status: Full time, AmeriCorps VISTA program
Salary: Living stipend of $990 a month
Program Start/End Date: 07/25/2017 - 07/28/2018
Scheduling: Monday-Friday 8:30-5:00pm (40 hrs/wk with some flexibility for evening and weekend appointments as needed)

Position Summary:

The Community Engagement Coordinator will increase support for refugees from Burma in Minnesota through several volunteer management and public relations activities. They will recruit, train, and support volunteers and interns in areas including youth mentorship, English and vocational training, walk-in services, and special projects. They will use print, online, and video communications strategies to strengthen relationships with clients, donors, and other community members. Finally, they will increase broader community awareness and support of refugees from Burma by coordinating Karen culture presentations and special events.

This position is a part of the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits AmeriCorps VISTA program. The program is comprised of 20 VISTA members committed to alleviating poverty in immigrant and refugee communities of color. Visit www.mcnvista.org to learn more about the program.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Increase KOM staffís capacity to recruit, train, and retain volunteers

  • Build internship opportunities for Karen and other students to gain professional experience in a human services organization
  • Work with KOM staff to create/edit volunteer position descriptions, recruitment materials, and training manuals
  • Train KOM staff in volunteer management skills
  • Assist KOM staff with volunteer/intern recruitment and training
  • Communicate regularly with volunteers, interns, and staff supervisors to evaluate KOMís volunteer programming

2. Expand KOMís individual donor base and improve ongoing donor engagement efforts

  • Participate in Development Committee meetings
  • Connect donor engagement plan with volunteer management and community outreach activities
  • Draft donor outreach and acknowledgment materials

3. Increase public awareness of KOM and Karen community through outreach activities

  • Manage KOM website content and social media profiles
  • Train and support KOM staff to lead Karen culture presentations
  • Assist in planning KOMís Annual Gala
  • Create/revise brochures, flyers, and other outreach materials
  • Attend community events as a representative of KOM


  • Demonstrated personal commitment to volunteerism
  • Strong writing, public speaking, and editing skills
  • Effective interpersonal and intercultural communication skills
  • Creativity in problem-solving and starting new projects
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher
  • Ability to travel within the Twin Cities
  • Experience working with immigrants and refugees and/or interest in immigrant and refugee issues
  • Event planning experience
  • Knowledge of popular social media platforms (i.e. Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn)
  • Experience with photography and/or video production
  • Proficiency in Karen, Karenni, Burmese, and/or Thai beneficial but not required
